After a long, tiring -yet rewarding academic year, my hols have just started, at last ! Anyway, I thought it might be a good idea to spend my newly-arrived holidays by writing a blog entry on holidays vocabulary. Last year, I wrote a very interesting entry about holidays. Right now, I'm going to share with you my vocabulary related to holidays that I used with my students of Básico 2. I hope you will appreciate it !
Verbs of movement related to holidays
- Go on holiday / holidays / vacation /
vacations (remember ‘vacation(s)’ is
American English).
- Arrive IN England (Arrive to England) / get TO England.
- Take some days off at work.
- Take a trip to…
- Go away for the weekend to rest / put the stress aside.
- Go abroad
- Travel by sea / go on a sea voyage.

Travel overseas (to Argentina, for
example).
-
Travel all over the world / all around the world / all along the world.

Get to Italy BY car/train/motorbike/plane/boat…
ON foot.
- Get on the bus/motorbike/plane/… vs. Get off the bus/motorbike/plane
- Get into the car/taxi vs. Get out of the car/taxi.
- Get aboard / board the ship /the plane.
Holiday activities
- Walk along the city / go out for a walk around the city.
- Go sightseeing (visit monuments, take photos,…)
- You can frolic in the water (click on the link to see another post related to this activity).
- Pilgrimage to Santiago (the Puritans
were pilgrims).
- Show someone around the city.
- Sunbathe on the beach to get a tan / get tanned. Remember to use/wear sunscreen/ sun cream to avoid a sunburn / not to get sunburnt (this typically happens to me).

- Go camping to a campsite.
- Go hiking/trekking to the mountains.
- Go swimming /skiing/surfing/sailing/fishing…
- Travel to work for an NGO (non-governmental association).
- Travel to an exotic place to do a photo shoot.
- Have a bath/ have a swim by the beach.
- Hire a bicycle /skis
- Buy souvenirs / Go shopping / go window shopping

- You
can stay in luxurious hotels /
5-star hotels or you can rent an
apartment.
- Book a flight / a hotel room (single,
double…)/ a trip to… (remember
‘travel’ is a verb; ‘trip’ is a noun). You can book this online or you
can go to the travel agency to
listen to the travel agent’s
recommendations.
- Eat out / eat local food.
